Missions

Missionaries were the first folks to immigrate to the Shawnee Reserve in Indian Territory prior to Territorial Kansas.

There were 3 missons established in what is now Johnson County. Each of the missions established a church or meeting house and provided religious instruction, classroom instruction, and instruction in agriculture, husbandry, and cooking, sewing and homemaking.

1831 - Baptist Mission established

1837 - Friends (Quaker) Mission established

1839 - Methodist Mission established.

Note: The Methodist Mission was first established in 1830 in the Turner area of Wyandotte Co.  The Mission was moved to present location in 1839 and the Manual Labor School andMethodist Church was established.
